Rollei 35

by M. Feuerbacher 2003

My grandmother endowed me a german Rollei 35, which is of about my age. It has about the same size as the Minox but it is much heavier since it a full metal housing. The optical quality of the collapsible lens (Tessar f/3.5 40mm) is very good but suffers from the fact that, due to the lack of a rangefinder, the distance has to be guessed. The exposure is fully manual, there is a built in light meter which can be read through a small window in the top cap.
This is a nice camera but it is definitely not one of my favorites. Rollei could have done better and include a real rangefinder. An often cited example of how it could have been done (same size and features but additional rangefinder) is the Petri 35. (See Stephen Gandy's discussion at Cameraquest).
