Drying and flattening FB papers

by M. Feuerbacher 2006

In the following, a procedure is described how to make flat and semi matte finished FB prints. If you want to obtain a glossy finish, this procedure is not suitable for you.

The procedure is tested for Agfa MCC111, but will, with some variations, work for many other FB papers as well.

After washing, dry the prints on a dryer rack. The edges will curl up quite a bit. Leave them on the rack over night, in order to make sure that they are really dry.

Put the fully dried paper in a hot press with the image side towards the cloth. I use a very old Büscher press.

Heat them for 10 minutes at about 50 to 60 °C. Make sure that the temperature does not rise significantly higher by putting your hand on the cloth during the whole process.

After that, turn off the press but don't open it. Leave the sheets in it for 24 hours or more.

A close up shows that the papers are really flat after this procedure. According to my experience, they remain flat even upon changes of the ambient temperature and humidity.
